Otari and Johnsons Hill Loop – Sunday, 1 October 2017

Three of us set out on a rather gloomy day to tackle this walk which started from Otari Nature Reserve. We were met at Otari by my sister Brenda and her dog.  We set off around the Circular Walk turning off onto the Upper Yellow Trail which immediately started climbing the hill. We came unstuck when I ignored the notice for the Flax Clearing as this would have taken us straight to the top but we wound our way around to a junction which joined onto the Blue trail. Part way up this, Brenda’s dog started limping so she had to turn back. This trail took us rather steeply to the top of the bushline and along a very overgrown path which crossed a couple of stiles before joining onto the Skyline Walkway.

We were meet with extremely gusty winds in a couple of exposed places and it was very fresh at the lookout point on Johnsons’ Hill. Not a good place for a refreshment stop as I had planned. The views weren’t the best as the South Island was shrouded in cloud.  We left via the steps and possibly walked the longer route as I missed the sign to Karori Cemetery. Luckily there was another track further down which brought us out by the Lawn Cemetery where a bench seat was beckoning to have a quick lunch break.  We then walked down the cemetery road before joining onto the Sea to Sanctuary walkway which took us along the stream back to Otari. It was back up the hill and a chance to enjoy the treetop views from the walkway before the rain appeared.  We were back at the car by 1.30 pm, feeling that we had enjoyed a good workout.
