Whareroa Farm, MacKays Crossing – 26 November 2017

On Sunday 26 November, eight Club members went on an excellent walk at Whareroa Farm, MacKays Crossing. We did the full loop around Campbell’s Mill Road which is about 13.4kms. Conditions were beautiful as were the views. The walk with stops took us about 4 hours. We finished up with coffee at...

Speedy’s Reserve – 12 November 2017

Seven of us had a great walk today up into Speedy’s Reserve.  Denise was my co leader and was out front leading and waiting as needed. As Linda said I was ‘camp mother’ at the rear. It is a varied walk, some up the side of the gully, three stream crossings where there are now very handy bricks to cross on, and some wonderful huge pungas on the way. There is quite a strong pull up through the pungas and out at the end up towards the park before Hill Road. The rain came in so we did not stop for lunch but had a great coffee and chat at Janus before we headed home. It was a cool day and very pleasant for walking As usual it was great to catch up with...

City To Sea – 29 Oct 2017

City To Sea – 29 Oct 2017

Six of us enjoyed this really interesting walk on a calm and overcast day. As it was quite warm, the cloud cover was a blessing as this walk entails lots of short hill climbs. We started from Bolton St Cemetery which was so interesting with all the early settlers graves as well as Harry Holland and King Dick Seddon at the top, that I thought it was walk over. Great stroll past the peace garden and up to the cable car taking in the amazing sculptures on the way. We called into a Victorian Perfumery before descending down to Kelburn Park where I got a bit geographically challenged before finding our way to Mount St Cemetery and a stop for morning tea. We made our way past Te Aro and down to Aro St. I saw a microbrewery residing in an old workplace and we made our...

Labour Weekend WCTC Lodge Whakapapa – 20-23 October 2017

Six of us stayed in the Wellington Catholic Tramping Club (WCTC) Lodge at Whakapapa ski field, Mt Ruapehu.  The Lodge is a nice comfortable warm building, a steep climb from public car parks below the ski terminal.  We had the privilege of sharing the Lodge with a family gathering, who cooked us beautiful dinners on Saturday and Sunday evening!!! We all arrived on Friday night, and planned various day tramps on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the group split up with 5 members walking the Tongariro Crossing, and the other walking to Tama Lakes and back.  On Sunday, all 6 members walked the Old Coach Road near Ohakune. We left early on Monday morning, for the return trip to Wellington, to avoid as much traffic as possible. All in all, it was a fantastic weekend,...

Te Ahumairangi Hill Loops – Sunday, 8 October 2017

Te Ahumairangi Hill Loops – Sunday, 8 October 2017

Only 4 hardy UHWTC members braved the drizzle to explore some of the many tracks in the Te Ahumairangi Hill Loops. Trip Leaders Mark and Helen Bassett had not previously walked the Te Ahumairangi Hill Loops but it quickly became evident that much of the route was incorporated in the Northern Walkway and Ridgeline Track. Pleasant short well graded route in close proximity to Wellington used by many of the local residents and their dogs for Sunday strolls.  Not quite challenging enough to warrant putting it on our Club Trip List...

Otari and Johnsons Hill Loop – Sunday, 1 October 2017

Three of us set out on a rather gloomy day to tackle this walk which started from Otari Nature Reserve. We were met at Otari by my sister Brenda and her dog.  We set off around the Circular Walk turning off onto the Upper Yellow Trail which immediately started climbing the hill. We came unstuck when I ignored the notice for the Flax Clearing as this would have taken us straight to the top but we wound our way around to a junction which joined onto the Blue trail. Part way up this, Brenda’s dog started limping so she had to turn back. This trail took us rather steeply to the top of the bushline and along a very overgrown path which crossed a couple of stiles before joining onto the Skyline Walkway. We were meet with extremely gusty winds in a couple of exposed...
