Te Ahumairangi Hill Loops – Sunday, 8 October 2017

Only 4 hardy UHWTC members braved the drizzle to explore some of the many tracks in the Te Ahumairangi Hill Loops. Trip Leaders Mark and Helen Bassett had not previously walked the Te Ahumairangi Hill Loops but it quickly became evident that much of the route was incorporated in the Northern Walkway and Ridgeline Track. Pleasant short well graded route in close proximity to Wellington used by many of the local residents and their dogs for Sunday strolls.  Not quite challenging enough to warrant putting it on our Club Trip List...

Otari and Johnsons Hill Loop – Sunday, 1 October 2017

Three of us set out on a rather gloomy day to tackle this walk which started from Otari Nature Reserve. We were met at Otari by my sister Brenda and her dog.  We set off around the Circular Walk turning off onto the Upper Yellow Trail which immediately started climbing the hill. We came unstuck when I ignored the notice for the Flax Clearing as this would have taken us straight to the top but we wound our way around to a junction which joined onto the Blue trail. Part way up this, Brenda’s dog started limping so she had to turn back. This trail took us rather steeply to the top of the bushline and along a very overgrown path which crossed a couple of stiles before joining onto the Skyline Walkway. We were meet with extremely gusty winds in a couple of exposed...

Pylon Ridge and Keith George Memorial Track – Sunday, 10 September 2017

Trip Leaders Mark and Helen Bassett were pleased to wake to fine weather for their Pylon Ridge and Keith George Memorial Track walk – the previous week having had torrential downpours. 8 members set off on foot from Silverstream railway carpark at 9.30am heading south to cross the Hutt River at Silverstream Bridge. River Road was crossed using the underpass which took us to Keith George Memorial carpark. From there we headed north walking adjacent to River Road for 300 metres until we entered the logging truck track on the left- hand side. About 1km along we had a small stream to cross before turning left and heading up a dirt track where we joined the Pylon Ridge Track. The previous week’s rainfall meant that the stones in the stream had become dislodged and...

Te Whiti Riser – Sunday, 27 August 2017

11 members of the Upper Hutt Walking and Tramping Club enjoyed a fine day and somewhat blustery conditions when walking both the Riser and Eastern hills, as we made our way to the Pueatua Bridge. Underfoot conditions were very good considering the rain that had fallen the previous week. This walk allows for many views of the Hutt Valley, Wainuiomata, Wellington and of course the snow-covered Kaikoura’s in the South Island. With the day being fine we also encountered many bike riders on the track. The track is shared, so be alert for riders who could be coming up behind you or towards you. We stopped for lunch prior to reaching the bridge. Once lunch was over, we made our way and crossed the bridge to walk down the Wainuiomata Hill Road and back to our vehicles...

Stonehenge Aotearoa – Sunday, 6 August 2017

A Weekend of Reaching for the Stars Friday 4 August 2017 at Space Place and Sunday 6 August 2017 at Stonehenge Aotearoa. On an extremely chilly but very clear evening, 20 of us made our way to Space Place. This was formerly the Carter Observatory. The evening began with a walk through the interactive museum which was full of short films from the Big Bang to the stars we see on a clear night, demonstrations on gravity and shifting sands in the Antarctic exhibition. We then went into the theatre which had big orange armchairs to sit in. These seats tilted back so the screen became the domed roof above us. We watched two very interesting films on the Big Bang and how we evolved and then another explaining our night sky. It was totally fascinating. The last treat...

South Coast Bays – Sunday, 30 July 2017

We deviated from the advertised walk and on a beautiful sunny and windless day (you can’t beat Wellington on a good day!) 11 of us met at Lyall Bay and walked up over the hill then down and around the bays past Houghton Bay and Island Bay to Owhiro Bay where we stopped for lunch.  We then walked back over the hill to Island Bay taking in magnificent views and back around the bays to Lyall Bay.  The walk took 4 hours and we finished with a...
