Ferry Road to Days Bay, Eastbourne : Sunday 8th May 2016

Another sunny Sunday saw 9 of us plus 1 dog set off from the top of Ferry Road for the (sometimes steep) walk to the Hawtrey Ridge Track where we turned south undulating along to the Korimako Track for the downhill section to Days Bay Pavilion.  It was a really enjoyable walk. We took our time enjoying the scenery and listening to the birds (not to mention having several “breathers”).  There are some amazing lookouts on this track. Although it’s fairly short in duration, it can be arduous in sections.  Everyone was in good spirits and we arrived at Days Bay approx 2.45 hours after our start. The Pavilion was pumping with lots of “Mothers” and families enjoying their Mothers’ Day outing with families in the sunny, warm conditions.  Some of our group decided to sit...

Overnight tramp to Atiwhakatu Hut – Sat/Sun, 16/17 April 2016

Seven club members set off for the Atiwhakatu Hut overnighter.  Suzanne, Helena, Anna, Sue, Denise, Judith and Sharon. It was great to have Sharon, Denise and Judith coming along with their enthusiasm and having a go at a night in a hut. We set off from Holdsworth road end at 10.00am in clear fresh sunny weather.   Anna and Helena went on ahead to check the bed space availability as there were a lot of young families also heading in for the night.  The remaining five of us took a more leisurely pace stopping along the way to take photos and admire the scenery.  The active slip has become easier to cross with a more defined path cutting across it. We arrived at the hut around 1.30pm with bed spaces available, although the hut was pretty well full.  A good wood...

Happy Valley to Red Rocks, 10 April 2016

Happy Valley to Red Rocks, 10 April 2016

Eleven of us set off up the tip track in Happy Valley on a beautiful, windless, sunny day in early April.  The track is a steady climb for about an hour and we stopped at the summit for a breather and to enjoy the magnificent views across Wellington City looking towards the Hutt Valley and Eastbourne.  This track joins up with the track to the Brooklyn turbine but instead we took a left and walked towards the coast.  We stopped for lunch overlooking the Cook Strait with Island Bay on our left and the Kaikouras (and a lot of sea) in front of us.  We then carried on down the track towards the beach. We eventually came out onto the beach just before Red Rocks and walked around the coast back past the old Quarry, through Owhiro Bay and back to the cars. The walk took...

Skyline Walk – Ngaio to Karori, Wellington, 3rd April 2016

Skyline Walk – Ngaio to Karori, Wellington, 3rd April 2016

As we planned to do this walk one way, I (with help from Judith), had to sort how many cars we would need at our end destination of Karori Park (It nearly did my head in!) We set off from Silverstream around 9.15am to do one pickup in Petone and then drive to Karori Park. We left two cars at Karori and drove two cars to the starting point in Ngaio where we met up with four other trampers. There were ten of us in total. We began our walk up Bells Track – which starts rather steeply through a bit of forest and then opens out onto a hillside heading very steeply up to the Skyline Track.  When we got to the top it was blowing fiercely from the north-west and there was a swirling mist,  although the sky back over Wellington city was relatively clear and even blue and...

Te Kopi, Easter Weekend : Friday/Saturday 25th and 26th of March 2016

For Easter we had booked all the available accommodation at the DOC  establishment at Te Kopi, Palliser Bay.  A total of 19 members and their families took part. Te Kopi is near the famous Waitangirua Pinnacles and offers good walking on a variety of terrains. The accommodation was good, as was the catering, which was members’ contributions on a “guided” pot-luck basis.  Quite a laugh went up when we realised that all the main course carnivores’ dishes were based on chicken!  The cooking and the variety were good, it all went down very well. Some of the desserts left us wondering, if this is tramping ….. heaven can’t be far from Te Kopi. Well done, cooks! During the three days we were there, various combinations of people...
