Akatarawa Forest – Sunday, 2 July 2017

The wet, wintry weather predictions didn’t materialise on Sun. July 2 when 7 UHWTC members enjoyed a long and scenic walk in Akatarawa Forest.

This is a massive Forest where a map and pre-planning are essential so that you don’t get lost in the myriad of logging roads and tracks therein. Logging and forestry work in this area also means that walks should be restricted to weekends.  Due to the remoteness and density of the bush advisable to ONLY walk in groups.

We left cars at Tulsa Park, Totara Park,  being our exit point,  and used remaining cars to transport members to the start of the Karapoti track off Akatarawa Road. There we began our walk along the Karapoti Gorge to McGhies Bridge which we crossed and followed up Woolshed Road and on to Valley View Road. With careful navigation our route eventually took us to the Cannon Point trig where we used the zig zag track back down to rejoin our cars at Tulsa Park. Drivers of vehicles left at Karapoti were then taken back to retrieve their cars.

Overall length of the trip was 4hrs 20mins but this allowed for a lunch stop and numerous stops to take pictures.  Coffee was enjoyed in Upper Hutt afterwards – a fitting end to a most enjoyable day.
